What you need to get your real estate license in Montana
Salesperson:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have completed two years of full-time study at an accredited high school or its equivalent.
- Seventy hours of pre-licensing education within the past 24 months.
- Pass the Real Estate Salesperson Examination within the past 12 months of applying.
- Hold employment or a contract with a licensed broker who has a supervising broker endorsement.
- Professional Liability & Errors and Omissions Insurance.
- Make a reservation and pay the $95 examination fee.
Broker:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Sixty hours of approved pre-licensing education within the past 18 months.
- Pass the Real Estate Broker Examination within the past 12 months of applying.
- Two years of experience as a licensed salesperson.
- Complete the experience points requirements as written in ARM 24.210.611(9)(b).
- Professional Liability & Errors and Omissions Insurance.
- Make a reservation and pay the $95 examination fee.
What is the passing score for the Montana real estate license exam?
For salespersons:
The exam has a total of 120 questions. The national portion comprises 80 scored questions and five pretest questions that are not counted toward the score, and the state-specific portion includes 40 scored questions and 10 pretest questions that are not counted toward the score. You need to score at least 75 to pass each portion of the exam.
For brokers:
The exam has a total of 120 questions. The national portion comprises 80 scored questions and 5 pretest questions that are not counted toward the score, and the state-specific portion includes 40 scored questions and 10 pretest questions that are not counted toward the score. You need to score at least 75 to pass each portion of the exam.
Upon completing your examination, you will receive an official results report marked “pass” or “fail.”
What is the time limit for the Montana real estate exam?
For the salesperson exam, you have 240 minutes. 150 for the national portion and 90 minutes for the state portion.
For the broker exam, you have 240 minutes, divided in 150 for the national portion and 90 minutes for the state portion.
What to bring for the state of Montana real estate license exam?
You must present two forms of identification. The primary form must be government-issued and current and include your name, signature, and photograph. Newly renewed licenses which result in a temporary paper license will be accepted as long as the expired plastic license is also provided.
- Examples of valid primary forms of identification are driver’s license, National/state/country identification card, passport, military ID and Alien registration card.
- The secondary ID must show your name and signature for verification purposes, such as a signed credit or debit card and social security card.
- If the name on the exam registration does not exactly match the name on the IDs presented, the candidate will not be allowed to test and the exam fees will be forfeited
