What you need to get your real estate license in Virginia
Salesperson:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- A high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Successfully complete a 60-hour pre-license course on the Principles of Real Estate that is approved by the Board.
- Provide a set of fingerprints to the Virginia Central Criminal Records Exchange.
Broker:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- A high school diploma or its equivalent.
- 180 hours of a Real Estate Pre-License Course approved by the Board.
- Applicants must have been actively engaged in full-time real estate work—averaging 40 hours per week—for at least 36 of the 48 months immediately preceding their application.
- Take your fingerprints at a PSI testing location in Virginia.
What is the passing score for the Virginia real estate license exam?
The salesperson exam comprises 120 total questions (80 questions on the national portion and 40 questions on the state-specific portion). Answer a minimum of 56 national questions and 30 state-specific questions correctly to pass the exam.
The broker exam comprises 130 total questions (80 questions on the national portion and 50 questions on the state-specific portion). Answer a minimum of 60 national questions and 38 state-specific questions correctly to pass the exam.
If you take the exam on a computer, you will obtain your score as soon as you finish it. If you choose the paper-and-pencil format, your results will be mailed to you by PSI Headquarters.
What is the time limit for the Virginia real estate exam?
The time limit for the salesperson exam is 150 minutes: 105 minutes for the national portion and 45 minutes for the state portion.
The time limit for the broker exam is 160 minutes: 105 minutes for the national portion and 55 minutes for the state portion.
