What you need to get your real estate license in Louisiana
Salesperson:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED).
- Completion of ninety (90) hours of real estate education in courses approved by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission (LREC).
- Complete all the application procedures required by the LREC.
- If licensed or previously licensed in another jurisdiction, submit a verification of your licensing history.
- Real estate salesperson license examination passed.
- Be sponsored by a licensed real estate broker and provide proof of errors and omissions insurance before license issuance.
Broker:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Be licensed and have been actively employed as a salesperson for at least four (4) years in any jurisdiction; two (2) of these four (4) years must have been immediately preceding the issuance of the broker license application.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate (GED).
- Completion of one hundred and fifty (150) hours of real estate education in courses approved by the Louisiana Real Estate Commission (LREC).
- Complete all application procedures required by the LREC.
- If licensed or previously licensed in another jurisdiction, submit licensing history verification.
- Provide proof of mandatory errors and omissions insurance before issuance of a license.
What is the passing score for the Louisiana real estate license exam?
The real estate exam for salespersons and brokers comprises 80 questions corresponding to the national portion and 55 questions for the state portion, for a total of 135 questions.
For salespersons, the minimum passing score is 70 points.
For brokers, the minimum passing score is 75 points.
Upon completing the examination, candidates receive a score report marked pass or fail. For candidates who do not pass, the score report includes a numerical score, a performance diagnosis, and instructions for retaking the exam.
What is the time limit for the Louisiana real estate exam?
For the salesperson and broker exams, you are allowed 150 minutes for the national portion and 90 minutes for the state portion, for a total of 240 minutes.
What to bring for the state of Louisiana real estate license exam?
You must present one form of identification with a current signature. The name on the ID must exactly match the name submitted during registration. The primary form of ID must be government-issued and must bear a valid signature. The identification must be in English.
Acceptable forms of identification include:
- Primary identification document (with photograph and signature, not expired).
- U.S. Department of State driver’s license.
- U.S. learner’s permit (plastic card with photo and signature only).
- National ID card.
- Passport.
- Passport card.
- Military ID.
- Military ID cards for spouses and dependents.
- Alien Registration Card (green card, permanent resident visa).
You will receive a handheld calculator at the test center. There is also an on-screen calculator that is integrated into the exam.

The exam is computer-based and consists of multiple-choice questions.
